Illustration of Amelia Alvarez of Clotheshorse
We recently had the pleasure of interviewing graphic designer, artist and illustrator, Jessica Brennan. In 2011 Jessica launched her clothing company, Tee Pee. Adorned with hand drawn illustrations by Jessica, every Tee Pee shirt is an original piece of artwork. Jessica’s illustration work has also been featured in several European fashion magazines, most recently being French publication ‘THAT’, previously known as ‘Dirrty Glam’.
1. How did you get started in design? What inspired you to start designing and illustrating?
I think I’ve always loved mark making as a way of expression and have drawn or created things since I was little. So it has always felt natural to me, and I instinctively knew early on that I wanted to pursue a career in some kind of creative field.
I chose to study graphic design as I have always found my work commercially valid. I think that even as an artist I have strong graphic design sensibilities that bleed into my work, and so this was something that I wanted to further explore.
2. We love your designs, can please tell as a bit about your design process?
After studying Visual Communication and Design I definitely have an awareness of the client/customers thoughts, and have found research key. Though not necessarily step by step, the general steps I need to take to make a successful design are: breaking down a brief and talking with the client to get a sense of what is wanting to be achieved, immersing myself in the subject for a while and sketching down any thought feelings or ideas that come to mind, refining ideas, discussing with client, then further refining ideas to completion. Even in self initiated projects the process is mostly the same, I try and show friends and family as much of my work as possible to gauge reactions and see if there is a positive response. A lot of my illustration work though, especially resulting in giclee prints are artworks and I guess I am the client and the process is more of an artistic one of pure self-expression without commercial intent.
3. What inspired you to launch your clothing company, Tee Pee?
I think that knowing what I do is quite a unique thing I have always wanted to have a certain freedom in professional respects, so I decided to set up myself as a freelance graphic designer/artist. I created Tee Pee with a desire to bring my artwork to something that people could use in everyday life. A tangible object that could be treasured for its individual style, quality and attitude. The Tee Pee label right now is still in its infancy and consists of tees and bags. All of the products are directed towards people appreciative of high quality garments, seeking originality and individuality in their clothing and accessories. Every Tee Peecreation is an original artwork.
4. What has been the best experience throughout your career as an illustrator and graphic designer ?
Really only being at the beginning stages of my career as a designer and illustrator I would have to say the best experiences so far have come from the sharing of valuable knowledge and connections made with experts in my field as I have sought advice whilst setting myself up.
5. How would you describe your style?
I love clothing that is well cut and has a simple elegance. With a great silhouette you can easily play with colours and textures and not feel over the top.
6. What is your favourite piece in your wardrobe at the moment?
A vibrant lavender silk Rodeo Show dress. Like most of Rodeo Show’s clothes it is cut beautifully and so drapes well.
